Annually, the world is celebrating the international day of persons with disabilities. It happens every 3rd of December, and each year it has a specific theme set by the United Nations (UN). The annual observance was stated in 1992 by the United Nations General Assembly resolution 47/3.
The celebration seeks to encourage the world to have an awareness of the current disability issues. It also made to assemble support for the dignity, rights, and well-being of the persons with disabilities.
Moreover, the United Nations wanted the world to incorporate the inclusion of the PWDs in every aspect of the political, social, economic, cultural, and even development. In other words, the 3rd of December is the day that the world must remember that PWDs are also part of society.
There should not be any exclusion to every aspect of their lives. If persons with disabilities have some limitations, the people around them should not burden their lives. Instead, the world must support them.
Therefore, the United Nation’s theme this 2020 is “Building Back Better: toward a disability-inclusive, accessible and sustainable post COVID-19 World”. The inclusion of the PWDs is much needed this year because of the global pandemic. If the world is suffering and having a hard time, the PWD community was also affected by it.
The World Health Organization (WHO) also supported this year’s theme because the PWD community is one of the most vulnerable populations in our current COVID-19 outbreak due to many health, social and environmental barriers, discriminatory attitudes, and inaccessible infrastructure.
This year, the International Day of Persons with Disabilities will be observed throughout the week of the 30th of November- the 4th of December according to the 13th session of the Conference of States Parties to the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.
So, if you know someone from the PWD community, do not forget to honor them and remind them of their value to the world. Like we always say, persons with disabilities are also people who have dignity.
